AV Fistula For Dialysis (Vascular Access)

An AV fistula, or arteriovenous fistula, is a connection between an artery and a vein that is created through surgery. This connection allows blood to flow from the body to the dialysis machine and back into the body after filtering. The surgery is usually performed in the wrist or elbow area, creating a larger, tougher vein that can tolerate multiple needle punctures that are needed for dialysis.

An AV fistula is generally preferred over other forms of chronic access for dialysis because it is durable enough to withstand dialysis treatment several times a week without collapsing. However, it is important to note that the creation of an AV fistula requires adequate arterial and venous anatomy to support its creation, and a sufficient time interval to allow the AV fistula to mature prior to its use.
