Kidney stone treatment is undergoing a quiet but significant shift. A newer technique known as FANS (Flexible and Navigable Suction Ureteral Access Sheath) is helping doctors clear stones more completely, with fewer complications, and without a single external cut.
Traditional Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) lets surgeons reach kidney stones through the body’s natural pathways using a thin scope. FANS adds continuous suction, pulling out stone fragments and fluid in real time rather than letting them build up inside the kidney.

Studies show suction-assisted RIRS lowers complication risk and boosts complete stone clearance, meaning fewer patients need repeat procedures. Often paired with thinner scopes as small as 6.3 Fr, the approach offers a gentler, outpatient alternative for eligible patients.
